I thought I've gone blind

I'm back from China, folks! I'm going to summarize my trip from the very beginning.

When I got out of Guangzhou airport, the first thing I've noticed was state of its air pollution. For one thing, I thought my near sightedness has gone far worse within the span of 16 hours. I mean, I visit the country every two years, but the white fog has always left me to believe that I was inhaling/ingesting chemicals, or even worse, organism's byproducts - it sure smelled like it..and tasted like it. Since this year's Asian Games will take place in Guangzhou, the government has spent an immense amount of $ on renovations. Thus, the building, drilling, demolishing, and rebuilding causes some insufferable pollution. Oh good ol' beauty can be painful, expensive, and health hazardous.

It is not until my recent trip to China did I regarded the importance of the extra few dollars guests voluntarily leave for their waiters/etc. In China, it is not customary to leave tips. For a scrooge-like, freeloading person, who only receives money during birthdays and Chinese new years, I found this notion absolutely wondrous! However, I soon learned that I should hold up on the celebration. Let's just say, without tips, waiters are inattentive, snappy (I had to snap back), and completely, downright horrible. For example, a waitress who served our table got an order wrong and blamed her idiocy on us. She had argued and acted if it was not her fault. What ever happened to "Customers are always right"? And worse, she persisted that it was not her fault and refused to change the order. Sadly, this was not the only restaurant with horrible service. MOST restaurants are the same, if not, worse.

I have to say, for the few restaurants that did not wrong me, I had a great time. The workers there were nice. For some, I wished that I could leave a few dollars on the table. Too bad I only had USD on me.

Remember how I said two weeks ago that I will hunt for a Pikachu for Toby? What I want is a cute, yellow, fluffy mouse that resembles this one from the picture taken in Narita airport:

What I found is.... a whole different story:

I almost crapped my pants when I saw this. Heck, how badly can they mess it up? To me, it seems like the manufacturers were building some sort of gargoyle and suddenly came up with a brilliant idea to paint a Pikachu overcoat. Apparently, this is suppose to be riding machine for children. From my observation, most children choose to ride the less threatening helicopters and race cars and left this menacing-I'm-gonna-raep-you-yellow-monster alone.

Art Tutorial

So, people have been requesting for art tutorials. Let me just say this, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE FLYING EFF I'M DOING MOST OF THE TIME.


Warning: I am not reliable for any heath issues that may result from following this method. You have been warned.

Here is the method I follow:
Step 1: Doodle something that resembles something.

Step 2: Attempt to form some kind of shape from those doodles. It is advised that you have some sort of image in your mind at this point.

Step 3: Redo step 1 if step 2 fails.

Step 4: If it still looks f***ed up, redo step 1, AGAIN.

Step 5: Do lineart. This is the step that you will start picking out mistakes that conflicts with your original plan. If this occurs, scream and bash your head against the wall and return to step 1.

Step 6: If and only if you are somewhat satisfied with your lineart, color, and pray that you stay within the lines.

"WTF" of my day

I was playing TinierMe, which is an online avatar (they called it "selfy") community. You can dress it up, talk with people. And one (if not, majority) of the reason why I joined it was because of the large art groups/communities. Well, I had fun. Until today.

I learned a valuable lesson today. It is not an emotional life lesson, nor will it save thousands of lives. But, it will save me from slaving myself in front of the computer, while I could have done something a lot more productive. (No, I wouldn’t, and most likely I would have slave myself on the computer over something else, but that is beside the point)

This lesson that I learned today is: Be careful of joining art contests. To elaborate on that, especially contests that emits a I-am-a- 7-year-old-who-can't-spell-nor-know-the-basics-of-grammar aura. (I should be the last person on Earth who complains about writing mechanics, because my writing is atrocious.)

Well, if I had been weary (which I was) from just one glance at the title of the contest, I would not be sneezing up curses right now. "DrawLing Contest" (the L was capitalized to accentuate the complete idiocy and the lack of knowledge of first grade spelling) I should have known by then that nothing good will come out of this.

I understand that everyone has a different taste in art, but whatever the taste is, an artist's skills should always be considered. Apparently, letting a 7 year old choose between obvious choices is like balancing chemistry formulas. It will end in a trainwreck, or following the chem theme, cataclysmic explosion ensues.

I would rather not post a comparison between my piece and the "winning" piece of the contest, because that would be totally unfair to the chosen winner. Plus, I will look like a complete douche.

Am I being a sore loser? In a way, yes. By no means I am denying this. However, given that I have an indisputable reason to bitch, I will and did.

Lesson of the day: Watch One Piece instead.
